The safety and security are the utmost priorities to Eurotunnel, key requirements which have been taken into account since the Channel Tunnel was designed. Whether faced with exceptional circumstances, or every day routines, the safety and security of Eurotunnel’s passengers and members of staff, closely linked to that of the various systems, remains at the heart of Eurotunnel’s choices.

To ensure effective control over attempted intrusions on its sites, Eurotunnel, which is neither responsible for border control nor has policing powers, works closely with the State Authorities. The group is developing high-tech solutions with a view to maintaining the quality of service for its customers and the safety of its staff, customers and migrants.
To face up to attempted intrusions from migrants since of few years, Eurotunnel has put into place an important security equipment system, reinforced each year with new additional high-tech means.
Other equipments on sites aim to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and speed of border controls on Terminals to provide an almost total border protection.

Innovative anti-intrusion system
The system, which is on a large scale, performing and innovative, combines in particular infra-red control equipment, electrified fencing, Passive Millimetric Wave (PMMW) control system, Euroscan buildings, video surveillance system… which will be completed by an automated anti-intrusion system – currently being developed – integrating video surveillance cameras and image analysis software able to automatically trigger warnings in the event of a risk.
At the entrance to the Coquelles terminal a passive millimetric wave scanner
(harmless to humans) and a video surveillance system enable
the detection of any stowaways hidden on board trucks.
