The 2009 Sand Sculptures recounts the story of the kings of France from the crowning of Clovis in 481 until 1848, the year of Louis-Philippe I’s abdication.
An exhibition of almost 1400 years of rule, grouped into 4 periods, revolving around one or more central scenes :

The Middle Ages

The period between approximately 500 to 1500, covering the reigns of the first French kings: Merovingians, Carolingians and Capetians…

The Renaissance

Starting with the rise to power of the House of Valois, rivalry between them and the Plantagenets, the Renaissance begins with the conquests of François I in Italy, who then introduced Italian art to the French Kingdom…

The Bourbons’ Absolute Monarchy

The year of 1589 signals a decisive turning point in the French monarchy. The assassination of Henri III marks the rise to power of a Huguenot, the king of Navarre and the establishment of an absolute royal power…

From Empire to Republic

Damned by the Knights Templers or not, Louis XVI was to be sent to the guillotine by the Revolutionary Council. If, on the one hand, the Revolution brought new ideas and abolished privileges, it also weakened the institutions. The Imperial take over was a success, but France would not suffer for long from the absence of a sovreign for its people…

The 2009 Sand Sculptures offer an up to date approach to the subject. Moving through scenes of royal life, as a spectator into the past, visitors will encounter great historical events but also royal mysteries, some familiar, and others less well known.
