Gite-Getaways-in-France-hero Staying in a Brittany gîte gives you the freedom to explore the Emerald Coast – Image by Flickr user Maëlick

When looking for places to stay in France, I often look at renting a gîte (pronounced “jeet”). A French holiday home, gîtes are fantastic properties that can be rented, and are great for everyone from couples to families. Comfortable and often full of character, I love the convenience and ease of staying in a home away from home when on holiday in France, and I like to think I know a good gîte when I see one! With gîtes all over France, I’ve written about a few of my top recommendations below.

Manoir de Bolu

Sharing a site with another gîte, La Grange, Manoir de Bolu is a beautiful place to stay in Brittany, north-western France. Maintained beautifully both inside and out, this gîte is a fantastic option for large groups and families as there’s plenty of space. The property is situated within large, landscaped gardens, and comes with its own heated swimming pool. If you choose this property, you’ll be staying in the rural Brittany countryside, in the commune of Le Quillio. Just 40 minutes by car from Brittany’s Emerald Coast, you’re in the perfect place to explore the Côtes-d'Armor region and beyond.

Meaning “starfish” in English, this delightful holiday villa is in the heart of Wimereux, just a stone’s throw from Calais, in northern France. Étoile de Mer is a bright and cheerful gîte, located 400 metres from the beautiful sandy beach. With an enclosed garden and private parking, this property is really convenient if you’re keen to see the Pas de Calais region, as it’s not far from brilliant museums and attractions, such as the Nausicaá Centre National de la Mer aquarium, and is less than a two-hour drive from Lille.

Le Pré

If you’re looking for a secluded escape in the heart of the countryside in central France, this gîte is for you. Sleeping four people, with one double bed and two singles, Le Pré is decorated in a traditional style throughout, with many of the original stone features well-maintained. Alongside the Creuse river, Le Pré is located in the historic commune of La Guerche. There’s plenty to see and do here, from the Château de la Guerche to the nearby town of Châtellerault, which is only a 25-minute drive away, and boasts some great museums and churches to visit.

Noillet

In the Loire Valley, this gîte is a beautifully-decorated holiday home near to the Vienne river. A 17th century farmhouse surrounded by rolling countryside, Noillet can be found near to the pretty commune of Champigny-sur-Veude. A perfect option for a summer escape to France, Noillet sleeps up to eight people and features lovely exposed-stone walls throughout the inside of the property. The private south-facing garden comes with its own swimming pool, peach trees and other thoughtfully-planted flora.

La Maison des Barriques

Found in the beautiful town of Paguignan, La Maison des Barriques is an ideal choice if you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion, or you fancy staying somewhere with a bit of extra luxury. Once a winemaker’s home, the building has been restored to perfection, with light and stylish décor throughout, including a beautiful oak staircase, white-washed timber floors and a fantastic kitchen, which is well-equipped. For views of the surrounding countryside, enjoy breakfast on the terrace, or have dinner at sunset.
