Want to whisk your family away to France for a fun-filled trip? Then head to La Rochelle. Known for its scenic harbour and large green parks, it's the perfect place to enjoy with the whole clan – dog included!

La Rochelle's backdrop is one in a million - with its luminous pale limestone buildings, iconic port and historic monuments, it's definitely a break from the ordinary. Sightseeing is the number one thing to do here – enjoy seeking out the old port towers, grand cathedral and renaissance buildings as you wander through the town.

While you're here, you must make time to explore some of La Rochelle's famous parks and gardens. Parc Massiou is at the top of my list - it's designed in the style of the Romanic Period and is scattered with symbolic sculptures from this era. Your dog will also get a good run around at Parc Charruyer, with vast lawns, meandering streams and winding paths, you're bound to lose track of time exploring these expansive grounds!

You'll be feeling peckish after all this fresh air. Lucky for you France is pretty liberal when it comes to letting dogs dine with you. Your pooch will get a warm welcome at most of restaurants, cafés and bars and can sit by your side while you get stuck in to some flavoursome French grub.  Restaurant Chez Arthur is just minutes away from the harbour and serves tasty homemade dishes and great quality wine. The food is all locally sourced, so you'll get a true taste of La Rochelle when you dine here.

If you're looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion then head to Richard et Christopher Coutanceau, the only restaurant in La Rochelle with two Michelin stars. This eatery combines tradition and innovation to create the most experimental and exciting flavours. It's located on the seafront, so you can walk off your delicious dinner along the beach.

My top place to get 40 winks is Hôtel Saint Nicolas, one of the most popular hotels in La Rochelle, so make sure you book early! As well as having comfortable and spacious rooms, it's got a lovely conservatory for you to relax in. Pets also get to stay here for free.

I bet by now you're looking forward planning your family's adventure to the White City. Remember, you and your pet can travel together with us 365 days a year, so get ready to enjoy some quality time exploring France with your faithful friend.

About the Author

I love travelling. France, Europe, the World! I’ve been to many countries around the World, but keep being drawn back to France. Just a quick trip under the Channel from our home in Folkestone, my family and I could easily spend every holiday there, from skiing, self catering gites and the odd daytrip or weekend break. I hope to share some of my stories and favourite places with our Eurotunnel Le Shuttle customers.
