Travel Green with Eurotunnel Follow our green road trip advice for an eco-friendly, stress free holiday!

Not only is Eurotunnel the easiest way to travel to France, it is also one of the most environmentally friendly. With the world becoming more conscious of our planet’s well-being, we know that our travellers want to keep their carbon footprint down. So, we have created this guide for green travel hacks - getting you from A to B faster, and cleaner!

How is Eurotunnel so Environmentally Friendly?

Eurotunnel has been dedicated to green travel since its conception. We are the only Cross-Channel operator to reveal our carbon emissions, which we have done since 2006. The entire structure of the Channel Tunnel has been designed with eco-friendliness in mind. The marine life is protected as the tunnel doesn’t interact with their life and fragile ecosystem, and as we use electric locomotives, we generate low pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Keeping Your Car Environmentally Friendly

check your car

Check over your car before going on a long road trip.

Before heading off on a long road trip, it’s just good sense to check over your car, making sure it’s running at its best. Not only is this the safe thing to do, it also means that you can ensure you aren’t contributing more pollution than necessary.

Clean Your Air Filter

Before you set off, clean out your air filter. Did you know, an unclean air filter can reduce fuel efficiency by 20%? You can clean your dry air filter with a vacuum, or use a cleaning kit for an oil filter.

Inflate Your Tires

Just like a dirty air filter, poorly inflated tires can have a negative effect on the environment. You will lose 0.3% of gas mileage for every 1psi your tire pressure drops below the manufacturers recommendation. Driving with underinflated tires is really dangerous, so it’s important you check this.

Purchase Sun Shades

We all know that horrible feeling of getting into a car that seems to be hotter than the inside of a volcano! And we all love the sweet relief of turning the air con way up. This obviously increases your fuel consumption, which costs you money and damages the environment. You can buy sun shades for low cost to put over your windows when you’re parked up, keeping your car cool.

Packing Tips to Keep Your Road Trip Environmentally Friendly

dont over pack

We’re all guilty of over packing! But, it can be really bad for the environment.

One of the great things about travelling with Eurotunnel is you can take as much luggage as you like, as long as it all fits in your car! However, be careful of packing unnecessary items, as overpacking can weigh down your car and increase fuel consumption.

Don’t Just Rely on the Boot

Did you know, keeping your luggage on a roof box rather than in the boot reduces your fuel emissions by 25%? Also, it gives you a lot more room to bring back those holiday souvenirs!

Pack Reusable Items

We all need to snack and drink caffeine rich products on a long journey! But those paper coffee cups and sandwich packets all add up. Instead, buy reusable coffee flasks, and try to bring your own food, you’ll save money in the long run!

Plan Your Trip to be More Environmentally Friendly

planning

Planning what roads you’ll take on your trip means that you can be as environmentally friendly as possible.

Obviously, you will plan your route before you head off, but there is so much more you can plan to stay as green as you can.

Look for Environmental Roads

Sometimes, the quickest route isn’t necessarily the greenest. There are lots of online tools you can use to plan a green journey, without any hassle.

Stock Up on Organic Snacks

Lots of car snacks come wrapped in non-recyclable packaging, which are obviously damaging to our planet. Instead, make your own car snacks and keep them locked and fresh in recyclable boxes. This means you can be healthier in the long run, and not have to mediate any fights over the last strawberry flavour sweet.

Starting your road trip with Eurotunnel is the best way to keep it eco-friendly, and cost effective! It’s just 35-minutes from Folkestone to Calais, where will you head on your next holiday?
