New Year's Resolutions: Travel in the New Year with Eurotunnel Le Shuttle

From taking up a new hobby, to pushing yourself to face new challenges, take a look at the best New Year resolutions to keep in Europe.

Many of us make New Year’s resolutions to get fitter, eat healthier or achieve something we’ve always wanted to. At Eurotunnel Le Shuttle, we think more travel is a great way to go when making those resolutions. Plus, you can combine travel with a fitness kick quite easily, as we’ll show you in this guide.

Obviously, running isn't for everyone, but there are so many ways you challenge yourself, especially in Europe. We’ll look at activities like outdoor swimming and hiking, to simply seeing more of this remarkable continent we live in. What's more, crossing the Channel only takes 35-minutes, meaning it'll be so much easier to keep your New Year resolutions.

Will you be brave enough to dive in?

Winter swimming

Winter swimming might seem a little strange, especially during chilly times of the year, but on top of the frosty sea, the slightly warmer parts of Europe are brimming with gorgeous pools just waiting to be explored, making it a great New Year resolution to take on. You can of course wait for warmer weather, but there’s more of a challenge in winter!

Kick start your New Year with an ice-cold winter swim at the Unox Nieuwjaarsduik Scheveningen. This chilly Dutch tradition takes place on New Year's Day, and involves hundreds of people coming together in their swimming trunks and bikinis to dive into the icy sea!

If you'd prefer something a little warmer, head to a superb collection of pools that are close to the La Cascade waterfall in Sillan La Cascada, a quaint village in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Despite the main pool being closed, if you walk further downstream, you'll come across a collection of equally amazing aqua-blue pools and another waterfall, which are perfect for a refreshing morning swim.

Walking through nature

Nature can often take a backseat to what’s on our screens these days, so why not make a resolution to get out amongst it more often? Walking is for all ages and abilities, just make sure you have the correct footwear, especially if you plan to tackle some tougher terrain or go out in colder weather.

Our top picks for walking trails in Europe

We’re big fans of walking trails that allow you to see the very best European landscapes at your own pace. These four trails are our favourites, from the dizzying heights of Mont Blanc, to the stunning Loire Valley (especially popular with wine lovers), which you can also enjoy by bicycle.

If you’re planning on walking with a four-legged friend, France is a wonderful place to visit, with plenty of dog walking routes across various landscapes – simply pick your favourite from our handy list.

Invigorating as well as relaxing, French woodlands are also popular for those who want to simply put one foot in front of the other as they soak up some amazing scenery. Check out the most beautiful woodland walks in France.

Running and jogging

You don't have to be an athlete to train for a marathon or half marathon, but it does take a certain level of focus. The beauty of running is you can do it anywhere and it’s often easier to keep going if the scenery around you is inspiring. If you do decide to take on the challenge of a race, then a great way to begin your journey is by taking part in one of the many races that occur throughout Europe.

Our top picks for the best running destinations in Europe

A great new year half-marathon to be a part of is the Tecno Globe Marathon, a road race that begins in the stunning, forested commune of Cernay-la-Ville in France. As you pace yourself down the roads, you'll be treated to gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape - a true delight

The Coburger Winter Marathon takes place in in January in the Bavarian town of Coburg, Germany. A place full of magnificent architecture, such as the Fortress of Coburg and Ehrenburg Palace, Coburger is not only a challenging race, but also an opportunity to admire the captivating scenery of this charming town.

Fancy trying to outrun the tide? Try the Les Foulées du Gois. This 8k there and back race is unique for sure, but perfect for a running resolution.

From close-by France to travelling further afield to places like the Netherlands or Italy, you can take your own car, set the pace (and the luggage restrictions), and experience local cuisines, culture, and architecture.
