Winter Events for Pet Lovers

We take a look at some of the best events happening in France this winter, which celebrate our beloved pets.

The winter months don’t just bring chilly weather, they’re full of some of the best events that the year has to offer. Whether you’re interested in pet-centric events, or looking to take the dog out for a walk with a twist, there are many events happening between November and early February that are sure to get everyone’s tails wagging.

Cats and Dogs: The Exhibition – Paris

A temporary exhibition, which is currently on display at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, in Paris, is the Cats and Dogs exhibition. The biggest science museum in Europe, the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie has been hosting the exhibition since early April, and so far it’s gathered a lot of fans, from humans to cats and dogs!

The Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie is an impressive place to visit, even if you’re not seeing an exhibition.

By looking at recent findings by animal behaviour experts, the exhibition aims to question how much we actually know about our furry companions. Taking visitors on a sensory, fun and active journey, the exhibition has three main topics: in their skin, in their heads and in our society. With film, agility tests, pictures and quizzes, the exhibition is a multi-sensory experience that is great for both adults and kids to learn a little about what life is like for our pets, in a playful environment.

The exhibition will continue until the 28th February, 2016.

International Dog Show – Marseille

Throughout the year there are a number of International Dog Shows taking place, many of which serve as qualifying rounds for CRUFTS. Between the 28th and 29th of November 2015, Marseille will play host to its own dog show, and it’s sure to be a lively event.

Officially organised under the authority of the National Canine Society, the event is essentially a beauty contest for canines, where each dog is examined by a professional judge, to see if they are the best example of their breed. Generally the dogs are categorised by age, and there’s even a round for puppies! Pet owners and breeders from across the country turn up for the event so it’s a great place to meet like-minded people.

The show takes place between the 28th and 29th of November, 2015.

Festival of Lights – Lyon

When winter is in full swing you will often find events springing up which celebrate the season’s characteristically cold, long nights. Lyon’s Festival of Lights is one such event, and as most of it is held outdoors, it’s perfect for taking your pooch out on an evening walk. For four days, the city, found in France’s Rhône-Alpes region, will come alive with a fantastic selection of light installations.

Over 70 installations from a variety of different artists will attract millions of visitors from France and abroad. Previous years have seen prominent buildings such as Lyon Cathedral used as the canvas for beautiful light displays, and as UNESCO has called 2015 the official Year of Light, this year is sure to be an especially stunning event.

The festival takes place between the 5th and 8th of December, 2015.

International Dog Show – Nantes

Taking place in mid-December, the International Dog Show in Nantes will see over 4,500 dogs take part in a range of events, from physical agility tests to professionally judged best of breed. Dogs are divided into individual groups, before being presented in front of the judges, and the top three being chosen from each group.

The show is great to attend if you’re keen to pick up a few tricks from the dog breeding trade, or if you’re hoping to compete one day. You’ll be able to see how the judges operate, and get a look at the level of competition. The show is organised by the Société Canine Saint Hubert de l'Ouest (SCSHO) and if you’re interested in entering, remember to register your dog in time for the event.

The show will take place on the 13th of December, 2015.

About the Author

I love travelling. France, Europe, the World! I’ve been to many countries around the World, but keep being drawn back to France. Just a quick trip under the Channel from our home in Folkestone, my family and I could easily spend every holiday there, from skiing, self catering gites and the odd daytrip or weekend break. I hope to share some of my stories and favourite places with our Eurotunnel Le Shuttle customers.
