Le Couvent des Minimes Spa Hotel, Provence

As the weather turns colder towards the end of the year, one of the best things to do is retreat to the warmth and comfort of indoors. There's nothing quite like being curled up in comfort with your loved one, with a fire burning and drink in hand, admiring the symphony of colours as the trees turn from green, through amber and gold, to brown. My wife and I always try to find the time to get away for a couple of days, and spend some quality time together. Her favourite way to relax is by visiting a spa for a weekend, and although hesitant at first, I have to say, it doesn't get much better than chilling out in a Jacuzzi or enjoying a couple's massage together. So why not spoil yourself a little, and head to France this autumn to recharge your batteries at one of these idyllic spa retreats. Go on, you deserve it.

Le Couvent des Minimes Spa Hotel, Provence

This spa, nestled in the beautiful Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department of France, was once a convent, built in 1613. Historically, growing and studying plants was an integral part of convent life, and the gardens in the grounds are still in use today; lemons, lavender, verbena and honey grown in the gardens go into the production of the luxurious treatments used in the spa. There are six beautiful, spacious treatment rooms for you and your partner to relax in, whilst you lie back and indulge in a spot of pure pampering. There is also a laconium, which is a dry-heat room, at around 55°, based on ancient Roman saunas, as well as a steam room and separate saunas for men and women.

The Terre Blanche Hôtel Spa Golf Resort really does offer the best of both worlds. Happily situated in the heart of the rolling, lavender-filled countryside of Provence, it's the perfect country retreat this autumn, yet it's also only 35 minutes away from glamorous Cannes, if you fancy a romantic night out with your loved one. That is, if you ever want to leave the spa! There are 14 treatment rooms, including two suites designed for couples' treatments, and an impressive laconium sauna with mint water sprays and crushed ice baths to cool down in. Plus, there are two prestigious golf courses within the 750-acre resort, should you fancy getting a round in between massages.

Take a stroll through the beautiful alpine countryside of Courchevel

If you really fancy pushing the boat out and spoiling your special someone, take the scenic nine-hour drive to Courchevel in the French Alps to the magnificent Hôtel Les Airelles. One of only eight hotels in the whole of France to be granted 'Palace' status in recognition of its excellence and grandeur surpassing the typical five-star hotel rating, this beautiful alpine retreat is a real taste of luxury. The spa here specialises in Swiss cellular revitalisation therapies to combat the first signs of ageing, ensuring you leave with nothing less than a radiant complexion. And if you fancy exploring the great outdoors (providing you can drag yourself away from the spa and Michelin-starred restaurant), the hotel is nestled in the heart of the breathtaking Trois Vallées ski region, which is simply stunning in every season. Why not take a tour in the hotel's very own Hermès horse-drawn carriage!
